Primary School Days

My Primary school days,
are the days that were the best.
Those were the days ,
where holidays were plenty

I remember my friend,
Who once wrote all C's
for his test,
and ended up getting an F.

I remember those days,
where we would have test,
and all of us would be in panic,
but end up getting all A's

Primary school days,
Oh Primary school days,
Oh how I miss you so.
I wish it would happen again.

My favourite Poem

One Inch Tall by Shel Silverstein
If you were only one inch tall, you'd ride a worm to school.
The teardrop of a crying ant would be your swimming pool.
A crumb of cake would be a feast
And last you seven days at least,
A flea would be a frightening beast
If you were one inch tall.

If you were only one inch tall, you'd walk beneath the door,
And it would take about a month to get down to the store.
A bit of fluff would be your bed,
You'd swing upon a spider's thread,
And wear a thimble on your head
If you were one inch tall.

You'd surf across the kitchen sink upon a stick of gum.
You couldn't hug your mama, you'd just have to hug her thumb.
You'd run from people's feet in fright,
To move a pen would take all night,
(This poem took fourteen years to write--
'Cause I'm just one inch tall).

Q1.How are the figurative language used in the poem? Give the specific word(s), explain what type of figurative language it is and why the poet chose to use this figurative language?

Personification, and metaphors are used in the poem.

Q2.Tell us why you like this poem in no less than 100 words.

I like this poem because it really exaggerates all the things you could do if you were 1 inch tall. The poet really explains in detail what we could do if we were 1 inch tall. The poem is also funny in a sense that the last sentence, (This poem took fourteen years to write--'Cause I'm just one inch tall), gives me the feeling that the author was really one inch tall. This adds humor to the poem, making it funny. this poem also tells us how small living organisms see how the word is like through their eyes.

3:protagonist faces many obstacles and benefactors. (Jadu and Mr Panwallh offer Hari jobs at Jadu's food centre and Mr Panwallh's watch mending shop. The park officer does not allow Hari to sleep on the park bench)

4:Protagonist solves the problem. (Hari comes back from Bombay with his earnings and their mother has recovered in the hospital, their father has also given up on drinking)

Cinderella v.s village by the sea

Cinderella

1.Protagonist in an unhappy situation.(Cinderella is abused by her stepmother and stepsisters)

2.The situation worsens(Cinderella's stepmother does not allow her to go to the royal ball)

3.The protagonist receives unexpected help, usually of a magical nature.( Cinderella's fairy godmother helps Cinderella get to the ball and gets her a new dress)

4.Protagonist is rescued from initial unhappy situation( The prince marries Cinderella and they live happily ever after)
Versus

Hari and Lila's story
1.Protagonist(s) is in an unhappy situation.(Hari and Lila are very poor, their father is permanently drunk, and their mother is very ill)

2.The situation worsens.(Pinto is poisoned and dies, and their mother has caught a fever and needs a doctor, Hari has also ran away to Bombay to look for a job but to no avail)

3.Protagonist receives unexpected help, however not of a magical nature.(A kind family helps to take Lila's mother to a hospital and Hari has found not one but two jobs in Bombay, he is also provided with a place to sleep and food, also, he has made many new friends who are very generous towards him)

4.Protagonist is rescued from initial unhappy situation( Hari comes back to bombay with his savings and their mother has recovered. Their father has also gave up on alchohol and Hari can open a watch mending shop when the factory has been built, as this would attract many people and Hari would earn money)

Amish lifestyle:avantages and disadvantages

The Amish originated Anabaptist movement in the early 1500s in Switzerland. They were also called the Pennsylvanian Dutch. Their lifestyle was very simple, with no electricity and no contact with the outside world. Also they do not have any automobiles so they either walked or cycled to their destination. Most of us think that it would be impossible to live without modern machinery, especially in a farm, however, that is more than possible, as the Amish farmers have been doing it for over five hundred years! Holidays observed by the Amish are the religious holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, Ascension Day, Pentecost, and Whit Monday (the day after pentecost). The reasons for these observances are to fast and meditate on scriptures related to these days. We should also mention that December 25 is a solemn celebration of Christ's birth and "second Christmas" on December 26 is a time for visiting and family dinners. They also follow their bible and the Ordnung very closely. The Ordnung is a set of rules for Amish and Old Order Mennonite living.

Advantages of lifestyle
The first advantage is that there is no disturbance with the outside world, so life would be very peaceful and tranquil. Also there is no pollution as the Amish do not own any modern machinery, therefore the air there is very clean. Another advantage was the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables available within walking distance, therefore, the Amish live a very healthy lifestyle. The third advantage is that most of the Amish are farmers and they do not us modern machinery to grow their crops, so they have to work in the fields. this would lead to them being more fit and thus they would not fall ill that easily.

Disadvantages of lifestyle
The first disadvantage is that they do not have any vehicles, so they could not get from one place to another quickly. Therefore, if there was and emergency, they might not be able to get there fast enough. The second disadvantage is that they do not have any contact with the outside world, so if there was any trouble in their village, they could not call anyone for help.

Reflections
Overall, if i could choose between the Amish and a modern life, i would have to go with......a modern city life, because i would not be able to do my research and life would be very hard for me, considering that i am already very used to a modern life.

TELE

TELE

TELE means FAR

This is another word part that is found in a lot of common, concrete words. "Tele" can also simply be short for "telephone" as in the words "telethon" or "telegenic."

I. FOR EACH WORD:

1. Write the word

2. Write what it means

3. Draw a picture to go with it

4. Answer the question about it.

word

meaning and example

what to draw

question to answer

(you may draw your answer, too)

telephone

an instrument for producing sounds at a distance (or the action of using such an instrument)

two different kinds of telephones

What are two things that are a lot easier because of the telephone?

television

An instrument for receiving electrical waves from a distance and changing them into pictures and sounds

two different kinds of televisions

What are two things you wouldn't know about without television?

telescope

an instrument for looking at very distant objects
AND/OR: (optional) to become forced together lengthwise with one part entering the other as the result of a collision; to become compressed or condensed (like a collapsing telescope).

a telescope

Who would want to own a telescope?

telegram

a message sent over distance by coded signals, commonly used for very important messages before telephones were reliable; messages were as short as possible because each word added to the cost. Often someone would be sent to a person's house to deliver the telegram.

SOmeone delivering a telegram.

What are two messages that would be important enough for someone to send a telegram?

telepathy

communication from one mind to another through "extrasensory" means -- sending thoughts or feelings directly into someone's mind from yours, or knowing what they are thinking. (Usually happens in science fiction stories.)

Someone getting a telepathic message.

What are two things you would do if telepathy were possible?

teleconference

a meeting of several people who are in different, distant places by using telephones or computers

People having a teleconference

What are two reasons to have a teleconference?

telephoto

A lense system that makes far-away things look closer

Where are two places where a telephoto lens would be a good thing to have?

telemetry

sending information over a distance by machines. Satellites use telemetry to take information and then send it to different places; hospital systems use telemetry to send medical information to nurses' stations

Something that uses telemetry

What are two things that telemetry makes easier for people?

telemeter

an instrument for measuring the distance of an object from the observer
OR an instrument to send measurements over a distance (such as from Mars to the Earth)

*Both* kinds of telemeters

What are two things you could do with a telemeter?

telephone, television, telescope, teleconference, telemeter, telemetry, telepathy, telegram, teleconference, telephoto

Complete these sentences with the "tele" word. Be sure to mix these sentences with words learned in previous lessons.

1.There will be a video _teleconference_ and people from all over the world will be joining.
